How to Start Getting Closer To God

Hi ladies! A lot of people go day by day just living their lives without having a deeper understanding of who God is and what He can provide.

Some of the signs showing that you need a deeper connection with God would include feeling lost, lonely, constantly angry, misunderstood, confused on your purpose in life, and hopeless. Feeling this way longterm can cause depression, anxiety, and so many other mental and physical health issues which is a reason why it’s important to get closer to God.

He can help guide you to a peaceful life where you are constantly favored, flourishing, protected, and fulfilled.

So let’s talk about it. Let’s discuss ways to get closer to God.

1. Start Praying

Pray specific prayers. Include every single detail that you can ever imagine to touch on when it comes to your conversations with God. I mean really talk to Him. A good way to pray would be to thank Him for all the blessing He’s given you first then talk to Him about your worries, your desires, that situation you’re not comfortable talking about, that business, that dream life you want etc. Talk to Him about it all!

The same way you’d talk to your best friend is the way you could talk to Him. Anything is free game with God.

He knows your personality, how you talk and what you think so nothing you say will be “too much” for Him to handle. So tell Him.

Eventually, as you get to know Him more you will start to see and hear Him answering your prayers. If you’re not sure of some of the ways God communicates, here’s a post that speaks on some signs from God.

2. Fast

What in the world is fasting, girl?

Fasting is getting rid of distractions or sacrificing something you love for a distinct period of time in order to hear God better. Some examples would be like giving up food, activities or social media.

Honestly, who wants to give up something they love ? None of us. However, this shows God that you’re taking your relationship with Him more serious and you’ve decided to be more disciplined in order to hear Him.

Sometimes you have to get rid of distractions so you can give more attention to God. Decide how long you should fast or what you should fast and then try to stay consistent so you can have a clear understanding of what He’s saying to you.

3. Listen to Gospel Music

Music provokes something within us. Music subconsciously controls your thoughts and actions too. Listening to music that constantly talks about sex, drugs, killing, depression or anything that’s not uplifting will affect the way you think and not in a positive manner.

Listening to music that gives glory to God and that brightens your spirits will make you a more peaceful, joyful person because you’re exposing yourself to positive and uplifting messages.

Instead of singing about popping a percocet, let’s pop a quick praise session, perhaps? Ok, that was a bad joke but I’m serious. Try listening to uplifting music for a whole week and notice how your mind shifts to being more optimistic, faithful, and joyful.

These are just some other suggestions other than the usual worship music if you’re not fully there yet.

Here’s some Christian Rap artists you can listen to: Lecrae, Scootie Wop, Andy Mineo, Hulvey, Wande, J. Monty

Here’s some Christian R&B artists you can listen to: Alex Jean, Madison Ryann Ward, Larell, Duane Caleb, Koryn Hathorne, Sondae, Morgan J, Stevie Rizo

4. Learn His Word

Learn who God is so you can know how He is. Watch more sermons throughout the week. Use audible to listen to the Bible. Don’t just get your weekly dose on Sunday and that’s it. Go on YouTube and start watching sermons and learning about the word of God.

I recommend choosing a plan on the Bible App that interests you so you can get a small dose of God’s teachings daily.

Also try this Woman’s Study Bible which gives you the themes, background information, and an easier understanding of the stories in the Bible.

Once you start exposing yourself more to this way of living you’ll notice how you start thinking differently, being more loving, you’ll be more in tune with God and know how to effortlessly handle a lot of different situations.

5. Have Good Company

Be around other like minded people that have the same beliefs as you do spiritually. Join a church. Join a belong group. Start talking to and hanging around other people who love God and try to live out their lives to please Him.

Once you start having more godly relationships that discusses Him more, you’ll learn more about Him and feel more connected with Him and others. You’ll be a part of a community that’ll make you feel safe, supported, and loved which is something we all need.

6. Set Time Out for God

Setting time aside daily to read the Bible, talk to God, write to God or worship Him will help you feel more connected to Him.

It’s like any other relationship, if you seldomly speak to someone throughout your life then nine times out of ten your relationship isn’t as intimate as it would be if you were to speak to them daily.

7. Stay Consistent

You won’t be perfect. Some days you’ll be on fire for God and other days your mind might wander to other things mid prayer (pray about the things your mind wonders to too). It happens to the best of us but try to think of your relationship as more than you having to finish a checklist everyday in order to gain God’s love. Don’t think you have to do all these and if you don’t your relationship is null and void. That’s not the truth!

Like I said earlier, think of it as talking to your best friend. Some days you can’t stop talking and your friend is eager to listen. Other days you all may not talk as much but your friend still knows your heart and still loves you.

He’s your loving, patient, kind, sweet and all knowing best friend. He won’t judge you nor punish you for having off days. Try to stay connected to Him as much as possible and always come back if you stray away.

No matter if everybody leaves or if everything in your life seems to be failing, always stay anchored to God.
